Kingwood’s Bourassa inks golf scholarship
Published 3:28pm Tuesday, July 7, 2009In October, Serina Bourassa helped lead Kingwood Christian School to its first volleyball state championship at Faulkner University. The setter is now returning to Faulkner to play college ball, but she will not be setting up points on the volleyball court. Bourassa signed a scholarship July 2 to become one of Faulkner’s inaugural members of a women’s golf team.
Bourassa tried out for the Faulkner volleyball team and Southern Union Community College team, but her best offer was team manager. Then she got a call from Faulkner athletic director ang women’s golf coach Brent Barker.
Barker wanted to see her play golf, so he visited the Altadena Valley Country Club in North Shelby County, where Bourassa plays. She shot an 85, her best score so far in her golf career, which began a year ago.
Despite having a state championship ring in basketball and volleyball, she is now getting serious about golf, having worked her score down to 78 in recent weeks.
“It’s taken over, and I love it.” she said. “I thank my dad, because he was always on me about practicing and doing something with sports. Now I thank him for it, because it’s taken me to where I can get a golf scholarship.”
Bourassa is one of four women’s golfers signed this year, including Shauna Robertson of Phoenix, Ariz., who will be Bourassa’s roommate.
In 2009, Bourassa was named Kingwood’s Most Improved Golfer and was voted the 2009 AISA Athlete of the Year.
