Lions finish third in AISA softball tournament
Published Monday, May 4, 2009
Kingwood Christian School finished third in the AISA Class 3A softball tournament Saturday after losing to runner-up Lee-Scott, 6-2, in the final losers' bracket game.
The Lions (17-6) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Karley Chamblee and Whitney Gillespie reached base to start the inning and scored on a two-RBI single by Kaylyn Ingram. However, that was almost all of the Lions' offense in the game.
Kingwood had just two more hits in the game.
Lee-Scott bounced back in the fifth inning to score four runs with two outs and added two more runs in the sixth.
Kingwood faced elimination early in the day, trailing 4-0 to Hooper, but a Katie McElroy drew a walk to lead off the seventh inning, which sparked a five-run rally by the home team Lions. Blair Holsombeck, Chamblee, Lauren Rozof and Rachel Holsombeck each collected base hits in the inning, with Rachel scoring the game-winning run on a two-out double by Madeline Lee.
Lee-Scott advanced to the championship game at 2 p.m., but fell to Glenwood, 8-5.
