Squad examines dinosaurs
Published Monday, November 2, 2009
Members of the new Science Squad at the Albert L. Scott Public Library learned about four dinosaurs during their first meeting Sept. 24.
Science educator Courtney Nix from the McWane Science Center led the children on their learning adventure.
Nix brought four dinosaur models and dinosaur artifacts for the children to explore during the program “Fantastic 4 Dinosaurs.”
The session focused on Tyrannosaurus Rex, Apatosaurus, Triceratops and Stegosaurus from the Mesozoic period.
One child had the chance to put on attire worn by paleontologists out on a dig and carry gear used in searching for dinosaur remains.
Another child put on a neck piece that simulates the plate of a triceratops.
The children also measured the length of a dinosaur’s jaw and neck with a super-long measuring tape.
They also saw a display of library books, including “Inside-Outside Dinosaurs” by Roxie Munro and “Prehistoric Actual Size” by Steve Jenkins.
