City’s efforts for seniors applauded

Published Friday, November 20, 2009

With family togetherness, friends and great food, Alabaster senior citizens have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. By this time next year, the city’s seniors will have access to one of the largest and newest senior centers in the state.

Alabaster officials and residents gathered at the former Buck Creek Mill site off 11th Street, Southwest Nov. 14 to celebrate several months’ worth of planning by breaking ground on the facility.

Walking along Alabaster’s Buck Creek Trail, you can already see signs of progress, as construction crews are busy preparing the senior center site. In about seven months, residents will be able to walk directly from the new center to the beautiful walking trail, which connects Buck Creek Park to Warrior Park.

The ground breaking marked a very large investment in the city’s seniors, and will provide a plethora of recreation opportunities that Alabaster has never been able to offer its longtime citizens.

Building the complex at the former Buck Creek Mill site provides a beautiful, central location for the facility.

We applaud the city’s leaders for working for more than seven months to bring the 4,500-square-foot facility’s cost to just under $750,00, which was much less than previous bids the city received for the projects.
