Larry Simmons, who will be inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame this year, compiled a 100-29-1 record during his 12-year tenure at Thompson High, culminating with a state championship in 1982. Following that season, Simmons moved into an administrative role at Thompson High, and served as principal from 1985-1992. The football field is named in his honor.
